Chrome extension guide
Learn how to summarize and turn any web article into audio with one click using the PUBVOICE Chrome extension.
What the extension does
The PUBVOICE Chrome extension extracts the main content of the page you are viewing from the browser side panel, summarizes it for narration, and turns it into audio. You can choose from 30 preset voices, or read aloud with your own cloned voice.
Installation
- Open the PUBVOICE page on the Chrome Web Store and click "Add to Chrome"
- Click the PUBVOICE icon in the toolbar to open the side panel
- You can also launch it from the right-click menu via "Summarize this page with PUBVOICE"
Sign-in
On first launch, sign in to your PUBVOICE account from the side panel. You can use Google sign-in (via the website) or an email address and password. A PUBVOICE account with a verified email is required.
Basic usage
- Open the article you want to turn into audio in Chrome
- Click "Summarize this page" to extract the content and summarize it for narration (pages of 800 characters or fewer are shown as-is)
- Review and edit the summary, then pick a voice (preset/cloned) and a speed
- Click "Generate audio". Playback starts automatically and you can download the file
- To use cloned voices, register your own voice in the "Cloned voices" tab first
Using your own Gemini API key (0 credits)
By saving a Gemini API key issued from Google AI Studio, page summarization and preset-voice generation become free of credits. Removing the key switches back to PUBVOICE cloud at any time.
- Issue an API key from Google AI Studio (aistudio.google.com/apikey)
- Save the key in the extension's Settings tab. A connection test runs on save and invalid keys are rejected
- Summarization and preset-voice generation now call the Google Gemini API directly from your browser
The API key is stored only inside the extension on your device (chrome.storage.local) and is never sent to or stored on PUBVOICE servers. When using the key, the page content and script are sent directly from your browser to Google.
Cloned voices are generated via the PUBVOICE cloud and still consume PUBVOICE credits even with an API key.
Audio generated with your API key is not saved to PUBVOICE history.
Credit consumption
- Page summarization (over 800 characters): 100 credits (0 with an API key)
- Preset voice generation: 0.5 credits/character (0 with an API key)
- Cloned voice generation: 1 credit/character
- Cloned voice registration: 5,000 credits
Troubleshooting
"API key is invalid" is shown
- Re-enter and re-save the key in the Settings tab
- Check in Google AI Studio that the key is valid and the Gemini API is enabled
- Removing the key lets you use PUBVOICE cloud (credits apply)
"Rate limit reached" is shown
You have hit the Gemini API free-tier quota. Wait a while and try again, or remove the key in the Settings tab to go back to PUBVOICE cloud.
Page content cannot be extracted
- Chrome internal pages (chrome://) and Web Store pages are not supported
- If no content is detected, you can enter text manually
- Check the debug log at the bottom of the Audio tab for details
